On February 2, the Mexican Association to Promote Electric Vehicles AMIVE called on its members to participate in the Dialogues for the Just and Sovereign Energy Transition with Dr. Jorge Islas Samperio, Energy Coordinator of the team of the pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, Claudia Sheinbaum. He was accompanied by Alonso Romero and Genice Grande, collaborators on his team.
Doctor Islas shared with the attendees his vision about the country’s energy sector and electric mobility. He pointed out the need to accelerate the energy transition to achieve true green electromobility. Likewise, he addressed the concept of social electromobility, with the aim of bringing new technologies such as electric vehicles to lower-income people, prioritizing public and cargo transportation. Islas Samperio and his team spoke about the importance of developing technology and capabilities in Mexico and having a sustainable mining policy, as well as giving batteries a second and third life.
This would also contribute to the storage capacity required to cope with the intermittency of renewables. Islas and his team considered it especially important to have an estimate on the projection of demand load to 2035 as the presence of electric vehicles increases.
AMIVE associates shared their vision about the electric mobility sector and the challenges they face as part of the ecosystem of this sector. Among other points, they highlighted the need to have a comprehensive long-term vision with specific goals to promote orderly growth of the sector.
They mentioned that the future administration does not have to start this work from scratch, since there is already a National Electric Mobility Strategy document that has been worked on with relevant actors in the sector and that can be taken as a starting point. They also mentioned that it is necessary to generate incentives for the acquisition of electric vehicles and achieve a balance point with respect to import tariffs and promote the growth of a charging infrastructure for universal use.
The event was organized by AMIVE with the support of COMEXI.
